Doug started coaching track & field in 1977 when he started teaching with the Calgary Board of Education. He taught Junior High Physical Education for 22 years and during that time coached school and club Track & Field Athletes. Over that time, Doug coached with Calgary Spartans, Calgary Track West and now works with UCAC. Doug was also active at the Provincial and National Level as an event Coach and a Head Coach for several Provincial and National Teams.
Doug, retired from teaching in 1999 to become the Director of the Southern Alberta Track & Field Centre. That role has evolved into his present postion as Head Coach of the University of Calgary Dino’s Track & Field / Cross Country Program.

Coaching areas include middle distance and cross country. Mike was a founding member of the Kelowna Track & Field Club and coached Brenda Shackleton who set the current Canadian Junior 3000m record (9:12.84) in 1985. Along the way Mike has developed numerous other National Team members, most notably 2004 Olympian Malindi Elmore.

Brenda began competing with the Trail Track & Field Club and then went on to UBC. In her early years as a coach, Brenda coached Lana Joly to a Canadian Junior Championship title (Long Jump) and the next year had 3 Juvenile athletes win National Legion medals. Over the years many High School athletes benefited from Brenda‘s coaching as they moved on to CIS and NCAA schools. This success motivated her to become intensely involved at both the Provincial and National levels.
Coaching areas include sprints, hurdles, jumps, and combined events.
