RHSC Gets Kicking! |

The Richmond Hill Soccer Club has kicked off its 2009 summer house league season.
Not only did the starting weekend commence yet another sure-to-be-successful season, it was also the start of budding new friendships and development of the lifelong acquired skills of teamwork, relationship building and playing by a fixed set of rules.
“Soccer helps him develop in a lot of aspects,” said Myrene Lychek while watching her 5 year-old son warm up for his first game of the season. “He’s running around burning calories, developing his gross motor skills and developing a sense of teamwork and socialization.”

“We have met a lot of good friends through our older daughter’s soccer.” Said Dave Lyckek, husband of Myrene, suited up in his soccer dad armour – a baseball cap, sunglasses, and a huge grin on his face as he watched his son kick around the ball.
“In the car on the way over here, he kept repeating to himself, ‘I have to score on the other team’s net.’” Said Myrene. |

Playing in a quarter-field sized area with micro flex nets that fold up and wearing oversized shin pads and jerseys that read ‘Timbits’ on the back, the soccer newbies were getting an idea for meeting new kids, and then acting with their new acquaintances as if they’ve been best friends for years.
While their children were occupied with picking up the ball with their hands and running away from ‘Mr. Wolf’ as he declared ’lunchtime!’, many of the parents, grandparents, and other relatives that encased the small playing area appeared to be either drinking Tim Hortons coffees, or busy tying their kid’s shoelaces, or chasing their protégée around with videocameras in an attempt to soak up the youthful joys of experiencing ‘firsts’.
Although seemingly unaware of the rules, many of the children seemed to have a general concept of the game of soccer. “You kick the ball in the net,” said one orange tot, to which the coach quickly reiterated “just make sure it’s the right net.”
Proudly entering its 41st year of volunteer soccer programming and currently run by over 800 volunteers, RHSC looks to “provide an opportunity for any person in the Town of Richmond Hill, to play organized soccer at recreational and competitive levels for both indoor and outdoor and to assist all participants in reaching their potential through the development of players, coaches, referees and administrators.” |
