IDP Program Outline
The focus of IDP is on individual skill development in terms of both…

  1. Ball Mastery: everything related to efficiency with the ball.  This includes being comfortable using all parts of the body to control the ball, improving 1st touch, learning how to use feints and fakes, 1 v 1 moves to beat an opponent, etc.
  2. Application: game related skill application and building game awareness

Most programs that other clubs and/or academies offer is the first part but very few offer the application part and this is key, as players need to work on applying their new skills in a low pressure environment in order to perfect them.
Our IDP program consists of two weekly sessions (see schedule for age specific details)

  1. Turf field – players will  have 1.5hrs of training at a turf field where the focus will be on ‘Ball Mastery,’  which includes being comfortable with controlling the ball with all parts of the body, perfecting their first touch, having more suppleness on the ball, developing body fakes, 1 v 1 individual skills to beat an opponent, etc.
  2. Futsal – Part two of the program is a one hour futsal game in a local gymnasium. Futsal is indoor soccer with the main modification being the use of a heavier ball to allow more touches on the ball during the game. During this session, coaches will be looking to see if players are trying to implement skills being taught at the turf sessions along with teaching numerous nuances of the game, including how to play in tight spaces, learning to create chances etc.  Instruction takes place mostly during the first 30-40 minutes with the last part of the practice dedicated to just having the players enjoy the game with minimal if any intervention.

Futsal has long been played around the world and many famous players have attributed their skill set directly to their participation in futsal. Locally, both Dwayne DeRosario and Julian DeGuzman have acknowledged that playing in the famed Toronto Hispanic Futsal league as youngsters had a huge influence on their skill development.
