Toronto International Soccer Show
Visit Score Soccer Academy and many other soccer organizations and merchants.  You can participate in some fun activities.  Enter some free draws to win great prizes.  Watch JFK alumni and Canadian freestyle champion Jose in action.  Chat with Score Academy's and one of the highest internationally licensed coaches Geoff. Meet one of Canada's most popular coaches Tyler from JFK.  Visit Soccer Show for details.  Runs January 22-24.

Bend It Like Beckham - One of the most important skills to master in soccer is kicking the ball.  Accuracy is everything.  JFK is holding a free introductory clinic called “Bend it Kicking” to teach players the skill of kicking.  David Beckham is famous for his ability to accurately kick the ball.  JFK has brought in professional Score Academy Coach Tyler Smith, England's clone of Beckham (yes, he’s actually looks like him), to teach the art of kicking.  Players will learn fancy kicks like bending the ball (aka banana kick), bicycle kicks, volley and more.  This introductory clinic is free to JFK members (past & present) and friends.  That's right, invite your school mates, neighbors and relatives.  For ages 6 to 16 year old.  The clinic is 1.5 hours long.  We are also including a free introduction to Freestyling (the sport of ball juggling).  In order not to over crowd the session, each clinic has a capacity of 30 players.  Please RSVP the name of the player(s), age and which clinic number.  Those that RSVP will be given confirmation and guaranteed entry to the clinic.  Those that show up without RSVP confirmation will be first come first served based on availability.  Pictures and video from the 2009 Bend it Clinic.  Schedule for 2010 Winter Bend it Clinics:

Coach Tyler finishes in top row in the Coaching Association of Canada and the Campbell's Chunky Soup Most Valuable Coach of the Year Contest.  An astounding 2,000 plus fans and countless beautiful testimonials. Thank you members and friends for all your support.  Tyler is especially grateful.

Members and friends of JFK,
I would just like to take this time to express just how truly grateful i am for all the support shown and all the wonderful testimonials you have all written about me on the Campbell's website.  Coaching Soccer is an extremely rewarding job, every weekend i travel in the snow for an hour on the bus, from my home in North York, knowing that when i get there i am greeted by the warmest smiles from your children.  I look forward to coaching them, and am so incredibly proud of how far they have all come.  And I trust you can see an improvement in them also.  When i was a child, the greatest thing my parents could have done was to enroll me into a soccer program.  The friends I made, the lessons I learned, the social skills I developed, the sense of being part of a team (even though i am sure my mum's reasons were to tire me out so I would sleep when I got home.)  This being said, it is really a great thing that you have decided to enroll your children into soccer and you should be commended for that.  I have been Coaching now for 5 years in many different countries, but you and your children have really made Canada feel like home.  I look forward to seeing you all again in the Summer 2010.  Yours in Youth Soccer, Coach Tyler Smith.

Toronto FC came to Scarborough on Thursday for a free pub crawl party at Jack Astor's Restaurant.  Pictured here is Danny Dichio autographing for these JFK players (left to right are Justin G, Dichio, Ocean H & Daniel M).  There were 2 types of jerseys in the house - TFC and JFK.  Adrian Serioux, Gabe Gala and Amadou Sanyang were also among the guests.  Gabe received an honourary super-sized photo of his goal in the TFC vs Real Madrid game.  Adrian is a Scarborough native.

France vs Ireland Handball Goal 2009

It's sad it played out this way, but those are those rules.  If the referee doesn't call it, it's fair game.  See youtube for the handball goal that counted.  Thierry Henry handled the ball preventing it from going out of play and passed it for the winning goal.  It was even offside which didn't get called either.  He isn't the first to handball and get away with it and he won't be the last.  Diego Maradona did the same thing in the World Cup.  Check this top 5 handball goals video.  Just For Kicks in no way endorses handball goals or any type of cheating, but when it comes to handballs, the only thing that counts - is what the referee calls.  That call is final.  That's the law.  Can FIFA over-rule it?  Yes, but they never have.

Feeling sick?

JFK's Jose Freestyles to 2nd Place
Jose "Avalos" started his career at JFK.  Last year he came first place in the Canadian Red Bull Freestyle Competition.  This year he came second to Scarborough's Jaime "Magnet".  Great job to both Scarborough natives for keeping us on the map.  Soon, we'll be seeing JFK's 12 year old Sameer & JFK's Mario in competition.  P.S. Turn the sound off when watching to the video clip (lyrics rated PG).

How did we do this summer?
Please send us an email, phone call or letter stating how your JFK experience was this summer.  Your feedback is important to us in order for us to know where to improve and what not to change.  If returning business is any factor of your experience, we must have done a great job.  We have registrations from 18% of our summer membership, compared to 12% this time last year, and it's only September.  That's an all time high record for this period.  Thank you everybody.

Every coach should have received the JFK Evaluation/Fund Raiser Tracking Sheet.  If you misplaced it, please download it, fill it in and hand it in to our office.

Nominate a Volunteer
It's time to nominate a volunteer for volunteer of the year.  Here's how it works.  Did somebody do a great job?  A coach, assistant coach, referee, administrator, or other volunteer.  Even a soccer mom, dad or family of the year.  Who demonstrated great dedication to their job whether it was a volunteer coach or a supportive soccer mom?  Nominees will be announced in September and the winners will be announced at the Annual Banquet.  Send an email or letter to JFK stating who you want to nominate and why.  The JFK Executives will sort through the nominees to choose the winners.  Categories for volunteer awards are as follows: Recreational Coach of the Year, All-Star Coach of the Year, , Volunteer of the Year, Soccer Mom of the Year, Soccer Dad of the Year, Family of the Year, Fair Play Award (usually a referee).  Click on Awards to see who won last year and previous years.

Chewing Gum can be Deadly
A player in Brazil ended up in hospital after colliding with an opponent and choking on his chewing gum during a match.  Striker Aloisio lost consciousness for a few moments as he collapsed to the ground after challenging for the ball.  Doctors said he stopped breathing momentarily as the chewing gum obstructed his airways.  Luckily they identified the problem quickly and took the gum out to help him breathe again.

This U06 All-Star semi-final play-off game was won in a penalty kick shoot-out.  Click on the image for a video of the winning goal.

Freestyling Clinic
What is freestyling?  It's also known as keep-ups.  It's the art of keeping the ball off the ground.  Kicking it, heading it, bouncing it off any part of your body, balancing it on your foot, face or back, performing tricks, etc.  Back by popular demand, Coach Tyler from the Bend it clinics, will be heading up this clinic at 6:30pm on Friday, August 21 at Bendale BTI School 1555 Midland Avenue (the field on the west side of D&M Thomson & Donwood Park).  Click on above picture for a video clip of some JFK Freestylers.  Pictured above is JFK's very own Jose, who is the Canadian Freestyling Champion.

The referee is Always Right
Here’s a great example: In 1986, Diego Maradona scored the “Hand of God” Goal in the quarter finals World Cup Match against England.  The referee didn’t see him purposely push the ball into the goal with his hand.  It counted as a goal.  Nothing anybody could do about it.  FIFA could not over-rule it and video replays couldn't change it.  When Maradona was asked why he pushed it in with his hand, he basically stated he scored the goal “with the hand of God”.  Maradona won the game for Argentina.  Also, it isn’t the only time Maradona had used his hands to score.  The video is on Youtube if you’ve never seen it before.

Over a hundred coaches have already attended one of the several coach clinics in preparation for the outdoor summer season.  Left photo shows some coaches on the field learning some hands on skills from Coach Brian.  Photo on the right has Coach Warren addressing a packed house of coaches on policies and procedures.  Bottom pic shows Coach Warren & Nick demonstrating more technical practice sessions.  More clinics to be announced soon.

The Sky Blue team triumphs over the Silver team in the U14 West Recreational division.  Both teams played a great game.  If you have any pictures from your games or practices you would like to share with JFK, please email them to us with a little description of who and when.

Coach Geoff gets an "A" from JFK.
JFK's Technical Director is having his coaching skills evaluated this weekend in sunny Florida.  If he passes, he would have earned his UEFA  "A" License, the highest standard of professional coaching certification in Europe (and the rest of the world).  We think you're already an "A", now make it official.

Thank you to all our staff, volunteers and helpers from the Indoor Winter Season:
Geoff, Warren, Nick, Brian, BK, Helen, Tyler, Luciano, Mary, Nuhu, Jake, Charles, Hajime, Andrea, Barb, Heather, Ashleigh, Amanda, Muffin, Alexandra, Haleema, Marguerite, Marina, Lahaina, Steve, Ken, Visar, Jackie, Brian, Steve, Ivan, Radu, Toby, Goran, Jamie, Michelle, Tracy, Joshua, Ian, Teresa, Gail, Bob, Liam, George and all the parents, siblings and friends that also helped.

Wow!  March Break Challenge Tournament was a super exciting day.  Click on the picture for a short low res video clip.  More pix at March Break Challenge.  Winners from the draws will be posted soon.

Earn $100 Cash plus over $100 in freebies.
It's true.  You can make $100 cash, get a free polo shirt, a free shoulder bag, a free rope pen, a free whistle and lanyard, a free air pump, a free coaches' guide to soccer and all the free coaching clinics you want.  No experience required.  JFK will teach you.  This summer, if you coach a team, you will receive all of the above.  It's a great deal worth over $200 in total.  JFK is serious about getting dedicated coaches that we are offering any one who coaches a great bonus package.  All you have to do is be committed to your team (and Club) for about an hour twice a week (yes you can still take a vacation), take a least one of the 3 hour coach clinics, do some administration work for your team (phone/email your players, fill out game sheets, complete simple player evaluation report, etc).  Assistant coaches can help with any of the duties.  Want to coach?  Just check off "I want to Coach" on your registration form (for U4 to U18 teams, not U3).  Coach clinics are starting in April.  You can even take an additional free coach clinic to become a JFK Certified House League Coach.  There's more, you can also attend a free referee's clinic is you want to step up your knowledge of soccer rules.

JFK Web Site Getting Really Busy

The JFK web site has doubled the number of unique visitors to its web site in the last 2 weeks, a direct reflection of the spike in registrations for the Spring and Summer programs including Camps and even next year's Winter programs.  If you haven't registered yet, you must do so ASAP before all the programs are full and to avoid late registration fees.

Help with Data Entry Needed
With the huge number of recent registrations, JFK is looking for some extra help with data entry.  If you have a couple of hours to spare here and there, let us know.  We'd like to keep up to date on all of the administration work and get the summer off to a smooth start.

Indoor Soccer Making Strides
(Partial News Article from CBC News)
As minor hockey faces a lull in registration, another winter sport is on the rise . . . Registration for indoor soccer in Ontario has more than doubled since 2004.  For B.K. Mitchell, a single mother of three who works part-time, choosing indoor soccer for her kids was a no-brainer. It only cost her $90 to register each child.  “It was close to home, so it was convenient, and the price was really, really cheap,” she said.  Mitchell’s kids are registered in Scarborough’s Just for Kicks soccer club.  While cost is one of many factors, the Mitchell family is one of thousands across the country choosing soccer over other sports. In fact, soccer is the No. 1 participatory sport in the nation, according to a recent study by Statistics Canada.
A 2007 Canadian Soccer Association report shows 867,869 players registered across the country.  In Ontario, for instance, indoor soccer registration has more than doubled in the past four years, from 40,000 players in 2004 to 86,300 this year, said Guy Bradbury, chief executive officer of the Ontario Soccer Association.  Read more at Soccer on the Rise.

Congratulations Coach Warren on geting one of the highest marks on the written test.  Details below.

Coaches Warren & Nick are taking an intensive national coaching course in Fort Lauderdale.  The residential course takes place at a beautiful $60,000,000 complex.  The physically demanding course has the 210 coaches in classroom and field sessions including a lot of work-through breakfast, lunch and dinners, plus homework (actually hotelwork).  They rise at 6am and and finish at 9pm for 7 straight days.  A lot more than the 50 hours the course is classified as.  Good luck on your written and practical tests guys and keep the sunscreen flowing. JFK looks forward to seeing your increased coaching skills.

JFK Member Canada's Best Freestyler
Canada’s 16 best ballers took their freestyling skills to the stage on October 12 at the Great Hall in Toronto, as they battled head-to-head to claim the title of Canada’s best freestyler, and earn a spot in the Red Bull Street Style World Final. The moves were fluid and the tricks were cool, but it was only one freestyler who battled his way to the top by showing ultimate control of the ball and creativity in style.  Just For Kicks own Jose Pena made the ball dance effortlessly to beat out 15 other top freestyler qualifiers from across the country. Wowing the judges with his skill, style and creativity, Pena was not only crowned the Canadian freestyle champion, but is now heading to Sao Paulo, Brazil to represent Canada in the Red Bull Street Style World Final on November 18, 2008!  Congratulations Jose. Read/see more at CP24.

Mary Kay at JFK
Say hi to Candice at MARY KAY ConsultantsThey were at Fun Day.

Paul M, the goalkeeper jumping 10 feet up for the ball, has been with JFK since the Club was started.  Paul is arguably the best keeper in the Club (and there maybe a few that come a close second).  Watching him play in the U18 games is always a great treat.  Paul is also a referee and his family volunteers on big events like Fun Day, which is coming up on Saturday, September 6 at Donwood Park.  Thank you for your patronage and dedication!

The referee is always right
Here’s an example: In 1986, Diego Maradona scored the “Hand of God” Goal in the quarter finals World Cup Match against England.  The referee didn’t see him purposely push the ball into the goal with his hand.  It counted as a goal.  Nothing anybody could do about it.  FIFA could not over-rule it, video replays can’t change it.  When Maradona was asked why he pushed it in with his hand, he basically stated he scored the goal “with the hand of God”.  Maradona won the game for Argentina.  Also, it isn’t the only time Maradona had used his hands to score.  The video is on Youtube if you’ve never seen it.

Special Requests
Please note that JFK receives a thousand requests each year for friends to play on the same team.  We are able to meet 99% of those request as long as they were submitted before April 1.  We have receive hundreds more requests in the last couple of weeks alone.  While we will try to accommodate most of these, it will be impossible to accommodate all of them because the teams must remain balanced in strength and in number of players.  Switching players around may take until the middle of June, so please be patient while we process the requests.  We will in due time reply to each request via email or telephone.  Thank you for your patience.  UPDATE: We expect to have almost all the requests facilitated by June 9.
