We are going to be entering an all Canadian squad so anyone who may be interested please e-mail Matt or Shane and get out to some practices. We need a solid effort here so we can prove that we have the best canadian players in Western Canada! There will be at least 2 Team Canada coaches there, so this is your chance to make a good impression on them! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magpies/Roos combine to win BC Cup for 2nd straight year!!! Four Red Deer Magpies (Matt Kidd, Darrell Smith, Brad Benoit, and Kelly Hyshka) joined up with the Calgary Kangaroos to head out to compete in the BC Cup in Vancouver once again. There were 5 teams involved this year, with Alberta, Burnaby, Vancouver, Victoria and Seattle competing. The games were tough just like in 2004, but the Alberta squad was able to win all three of their matches, and hold on to the title for a second straight year. Struggling for numbers again, the Pies fought hard in this match, but the fact that they had 0 interchange players on the bench started to become evident as the game progessed. By early in the 3rd quarter, the Roos started pulling away, and they soon had a huge lead over the tired Magpies. Well done to the boys who did make it out, and had to play the entire match. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magpies come closer in second game but fall to Roos again The Magpies came out a lot harder in the second game of the season, and even stayed with the Kangaroos for three quarters, but in the end the Roos pulled away again. Having a few different players out for the game seemed to inspire the Pies to fight hard against the Roos, and for quite awhile it looked like it might even be enough to win, but it was not to be on this day. The Roos fielded what was probably their strongest side in the club's four year history, and they easily dispatched the Pies on this day. The first inter-squad game of the year was a big success with two 8-a-side Magpie teams battling it out in a hard fought and well contested match. The Red Deer Magpies proved that they are more than just a great footy team by capturing the Division 3 League Championship Game in their first year in the Red Deer Indoor Soccer League. The Pies, who initially entered the league as a way to stay fit in the off season, defeated the Red Deer Titans RFC 6 -2 to win the Division 3 indoor soccer title. Click here to read the full story
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Magpies crush Kangaroos in first ever Alberta Grand Final!!! The 2004 Alberta Footy Season ended on a dramatically different note than it began with the Red Deer Magpies soundly defeating the Calgary Kangaroos in the first ever Alberta Grand Final. Full story to be posted shortly
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Deer Sevens Tournament The first ever Magpies Sevens Footy Tournament was hosted by the Red Deer Magpies in August of 2004, and it made for a great day of footy. This faster paced and higher scoring variation of footy was a nice change for the guys after the tough (but rewarding) weekend in Vancouver. Click here to read the full story
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alberta Aussies still a little too strong for Alberta Canucks As a change of pace from the regular competition, the Australian Albertans took on the Non-Australian Albertans in a game of 12 a side footy. The Canucks put up a great fight, but in the end the Australians were too experienced, and they came out on top by a few goals. The rematch in 2005 may tell a different story though as many of the Canadians (and Irish) will now have a full season under their belt, and they will be aiming to show the Aussies a thing or two about their game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alberta Boys Bring Home The BC Cup!!! Combined Alberta teams Calgary and Red Deer defeat Vancouver and Victoria in a great weekend of football. With one of the best Australian football squads ever to play on Canadian soil, the Alberta Magpies went into BC and dominated their western counterparts with two hard fought victories. The big game against Vancouver was especially memorable for the guys as they defeated an experienced team made up primarily of Australians. Big thanks goes out to Leigh, Chriso and Rosie who have really helped to develop the Canadians who made a big impact in this game.
